Giclée Printing refers to a printmaking method that involves using a digitised image outputted from a computer to a large format inkjet printer. The term “giclee” is derived from the French for “spray” and was first coined by Jack Duganne, a printmaker, to represent an inkjet-based digital print used as fine art.
To qualify for the title of a “fine art giclée print” it should be made on archival quality coated paper, and printed with pigment-based archival inks, which are UV stable. The Fine Art Trade Guild has set minimum standards for a giclee print – it must score 6 or more on the Blue Wool Scale for light fastness, with an acidity level of between pH7 and pH9, to minimise discolouring.
Double Take This picture was taken during my trip to Lisbon, Portugal using my 6×6 medium format Zeiss Ikon Nettar medium format camera. I had visited the Alfama district of Lisbon twice and noticed the Igreja de Santo Estêvão, St. Stephen’s Church at the top of the fill when I’d walked back down to sea level. I’d taken a couple of pictures of the Colonnadee around the Arco da Rua Augusta and that gave me the idea of taking the first frame of Igreja de Santo Estêvão, St. Stephen’s Church just before sunset and a second of the Colonnade at Arco da Rua Augusta early in the morning with the light coming directly through the arches. This turned out better than expected. The paper I have chosen to have this picture printed on is Hahnemühle Baryta, this is a beautiful heavy paper with an orange peel texture that brings the colour to life with its gloss finish.
Hahnemühle FineArt Baryta is a bright white, cellulose-based Fine Art inkjet paper with an inkjet coating specially tailored for FineArt use. The clearly visible, exquisite felt structure lends the paper its lovely soft feel and tactile surface texture to produce prints with stunning three-dimensional quality and depth.
